On Sunday night, Carey’s 2013 film The Great Gatsby was awarded two awards at the 86th Academy Awards, for Best Achievement in Costume Design (Catherine Martin) and Best Achievement in Production Design (Catherine Martin and Beverley Dunn).
The Great Gatsby triumphed over fellow nominees American Hustle, The Grandmaster, The Invisible Woman and Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave for Best Costume Design, turning Martin into the most successful Australian in Oscars history.
Martin spoke to ABC before the ceremony and praised the nominations for The Great Gatsby team: “Along with the AACTA awards, it marks a great shift, I think, for our industry in recognising that we can make any story in [Australia].” Catherine Martin now has four Oscars after previously winning for her work on Moulin Rouge!, also directed by her husband Baz Luhrmann.
Baz Luhrmann’s blockbuster The Great Gatsby has led the nominations for the 3rd annual AACTA Awards with 14 nods, closely followed by Kim Mordaunt’s independent film The Rocket
The two are vastly different Australian features. The Great Gatsby is a razzle-dazzle adaptation of an American classic novel, while The Rocket, which earned 12 nominations, is a low-budget, foreign-language feature, filmed entirely in Laos with a lead actor plucked from the streets.
The two features are also up for Best Film alongside Dead Europe, Mystery Road, Satellite Boy and The Turning.
You can read the full list of nominations here. The 3rd annual AACTA Awards ceremony will be held on January 30, 2014
I have just added over 700 Blu-Ray/HD quality screen captures of Carey as the infamous Daisy Buchanan from Baz Luhrmann’s summer epic The Great Gatsby. Enjoy!
